Sports Fixtures

At Ormiston Rivers Academy we offer a range of opportunities for students to partake in sporting teams who represent the school in both county and national competitions, and fixtures with other local schools.

Competing in the Mid-Essex District provides a wealth of opportunities to represent the Academy in sports such as netball, football, rugby, cross country, athletics and cricket to name a few.

District competition and links with local clubs, allows our students a pathway to further opportunities. This can be seen in a number of cases such as Blake in Year 9 who represented the District in Cross Country and has been part of the District football team for three years. A number of students have also been selected to attend the Developing Player Pathway for Essex rugby.

A number of students also go on to represent the District at the County Athletic Championships held at Chelmsford Athletic Centre. Success at the County event can even lead to National competitions with the privilege of representing Essex.

Our successful Year 10 rugby team are also enjoying fixtures in the National Schools and Essex Cup after District level success in previous years.

Year 11 Football – District Cup Semi Final

After a quarter final win against Anglo European, we headed to Shenfield for the semi final. Knowing how strong Shenfield would be, the team started the game strongly with the central partnership or Beauden and Teddy keeping the opposition at bay. The first goal fell to us – Kaden picked up a stray clearance to strike with his right from inside the box and beat the keeper as it crept under his body.

The first half ended 1-0 and in all fairness, we had played well enough to deserve the lead.

The second half was more intense, and with our front 3 causing issues all game, it was Archie’s turn to unleash from just outside the corner of the box. His shot beat the outstretched keeper before hitting the post and heading in – a great strike! The final 15 minutes were nervy, but after surviving a few Shenfield attempts, the game finished 2-0 – a clean sheet was a wonderful testament to our work rate and organisation in defence.

The final will be played after the Easter holidays. Many congratulation to all of our players.

Year 8 & 9 Netball

On Monday night the girl’s netball teams travelled to Hylands School for a double fixture. The Year 8 team played the whole game a man down with 6 players and still showed their skills. The Year 9 team played well, with people stepping up at the last minute to play. Despite the loss, both teams played well.

Year 8 Player of the match – Scarlet W (8A2)
Year 9 Player of the match – Madi P (9M1)

Year 7 & 8 Netball
On Wednesday night we hosted Brentwood County High School for a double fixture of our Year 7 and 8 Netball teams. The Year 7 team saw girls new to the team play their first fixture, Lola M, Layla C and Bella D. The girls fitted in straight away and helped us to score our points. The Year 8 team played a great game, winning 10-6. The girls showed great teamwork and played well together.

Year 7 play of the match – Em J-G (7M2)
Year 8 player of the match – Megan K (8D2)

Thank you to all the girls who show up weekly to represent our school!

Cross Country

On Tuesday we took 5 students to the Cross Country Competition held at Writtle University College. We had Jenna (7M1) run our Year 7 girls race and managed to finish with an amazing time. We also had Beau (7M1) , Sonny (7Z1) and Henry (7A2) run in the boys 3000m race with Henry placing very well for the category. We had one Year 8 girl enter for the race, Lorna (8Z2) who managed to come 22nd out of over 150 runners.

We are extremely proud of the students who took part and want to congratulate them on their success!

Year 7 Girls Futsal

On Wednesday our Year 7 girls had a Futsal competition where we had to travel away to The Sandon School. The 5-a-side game saw us playing some great football and showing amazing teamwork by supporting one another. The girls drew their first game to Sandon 1-1. We were then able to get a win against Brentwood County High School. This saw us progress into the semi-finals, where we faced Great Baddow. We managed to place 4th due to goal difference. The girls showed great determination and teamwork during the event.

We are very proud of the girls who took part and especially those who stepped up when we were in need of players. Players: Jenna (7M1), Anais (7Z1), Annabelle (7Z2), Abby (7D2), Gracie (7D2), Lila (7A1)

Year 8/9 Girls Football

Our Year 8 and 9 girls football team had a fixture on Thursday night where we hosted Chelmer Valley High School. The game saw us playing some good football with our passing and taking all the chances we had. The opposition goalkeeper was amazing and made some really good saves. However, we were lucky to get 2 goals to take us into the end with a 2-0 lead. Thank you to the girls who took part in the match, and to those who continue to come to training on a Tuesday after school. Player of the match was Isabelle W. Well done!

Year 10 Rugby

On Wednesday 7th February the Year 10 boys travelled to Anglo European for a rugby match. This was a tough game for the boys who played out of their skin with a great team performance. A very wet pitch from the rain made it a great game to play and watch. There were some fantastic passages of play from Jordan running aggressively down the wing to a great defensive display from Oliver who tackled anything that moved. Mylo made fantastic inroads into the opposition’s defence with windy runs. Top tackler of the day was Kaison who was fearsome at bringing the opposition down. Commiseration to Robert who’s try at the end of game was disallowed for a double movement.

Year 7 Netball

Year 7 Netballers had a tournament at William de Ferrers on Wednesday.  This was a great opportunity to allow some of the girls who regularly come to practice and others who are wanting to get more involved a chance to play at a fun tournament. They won 2 matches, lost 2, and drew 1.  Overall, they had a great evening and, despite the cold weather setting in, optimistic throughout.

A shout out goes to Abby 7D2, for her enthusiasm after each match leading the three cheers chant!

Year 8 Netball

We were fortunate enough to have even larger numbers for our Year 8 Netball tournament yesterday, where we brought two teams to compete at William de Ferrers. We have had some great interest with our Year 8s in terms of sports clubs so wanted to have the opportunity to have more students playing than usual. One of our teams managed to come 4th in the tournament and the other came 6th.  Well done!

Any girls looking to play netball or have some fun at clubs, please come along to Netball club Thursdays from 3:20pm – 4:20pm.

Year 10 Football

Year 10s Boys football team did themselves proud on Monday. It would have been hard to pick a man of the match as they all stepped up and rose to the occasion.  They felt disappointed to lose 2-0 to WDF but can be proud about how well they played together. In the first half they played against the wind but controlled the ball well, defended as a unit and nullified the threat. They used the ball well, attacking from the left then right wing. An unfortunate goal was conceded from a cross that bobbled around the penalty area.In the second half ORA continued to create chances, had some free kicks in promising areas, and were unlucky to miss several good goal scoring opportunities. ORA went searching for the equaliser but were caught on the break with the last play of the match.

Year 8 Rugby

It was Gt. Baddow’s turn to host the third rugby tournament of the year. The pitches were sticky in places but with St John Payne, Beckett Keys and Sandon in our pool, it was set to be an enjoyable afternoon. Sandon were first up and played outstanding rugby. Their strong forwards kept the ball well before using the backs to great effect which meant they won comfortably.

Our next 2 games against Becket Keys and St John Payne were much better. Both games were unbelievably tight but we lost out by one score in both games. Effort levels could not be faulted however, and all the players deserve credit for their attitude. Charlie, Jamie and James all on the score sheet for us.

The next tournament will be held on our playing fields in March, we’ll look forward to even more rugby then. A reminder that training is every Tuesday after school.

Year 7 Netball

On Wednesday the Year 7 girls netball team travelled to Plume School for 2 fixtures. The first fixture saw the Year 7 team face William De Ferres, who were superb with their netball skills. The second fixture saw the girls face Plume, who gave us a good game but unfortunately took the points. The girls played well as their first netball fixture as a team and showed great resilience.

Player of the game against Plume was Leyla M.

Any girls looking to play netball or have some fun at clubs, please come along to Netball club Thursdays from 3:20pm – 4:20pm.
