Q. How likely is it that my child will be allocated a place at Ormiston Rivers Academy?
Our Published Admission Number is 180, and we will not be able to admit a higher number of students. We strongly advise you to submit your application as soon as possible, and definitely prior to the deadline of 31st October, as late applications are extremely likely to affect the possibility of your child being awarded a place.
You should apply via the Essex County Council website at: https://www.essex.gov.uk/apply-for-a-secondary-school-place. You will be notified by email on 1st March 2021 whether your child has been allocated a place.
Further queries regarding admissions should be directed to Mrs J. Edwards at: email@example.com
Q. What subjects will my child be taught in Year 7?
At Ormiston Rivers Academy we offer a broad and balanced curriculum, designed to inspire and encourage students to become engaged, inquiring and fully rounded individuals. All students in Year 7 will study the core subjects of English, Maths and Science, alongside History, Geography, Religious Studies, Art & Design, Music, Drama, Design Technology, French, Computer Science and P.E. Students will also be taught PSHE and Citizenship through the mentor and assembly programme.
Q. What additional resources/support are available for the most able children?
Our mission for our Most Able is simple: To out-perform every school in Essex, including the selective grammar schools. In order to achieve this, the academy has the following initiatives in place:
Elite Scholar Programme
Subject Scholar Initiative
Student Leader Programme
KS3 Independent Learning Support
Year 11 Prefect Initiative
Links with prestigious university programmes, including specialist coaching help for those wishing to apply to Oxford or Cambridge
Our most able cohort has continued to rise to the challenge year on year, with many students being accepted to the most prestigious “Russell Group” Universities, and going on to study Medicine, Mathematics, Science, the Arts and Modern Foreign Language degrees (to name a few) with great success.
Q. What support is available to my child?
All students will be assigned an individual mentor, who they will see at the beginning of every day. Each year group also has an Achievement Director (Head of Year), who are available to guide and support your child. We also have a Student Support Team with fully trained and qualified Mental Health First Aiders, and a team of “Wellbeing Warriors”; all of whom are available to your child should they have any worries or concerns.
Q. What careers advice is available to my child?
All students have access to a comprehensive careers programme as well as independent and impartial careers advice and guidance. We want to support and encourage students to make informed choices about their future and be well prepared for their next steps.
We are committed to ensuring that our Careers provision meets all the current guidelines for good practice, in order to prepare and equip our students for their future careers.
We measure and evaluate our programme via the Quality in Careers Standard and the 8 GATSBY Benchmarks.
We currently hold the recognition of quality award in careers education. This is now known as the National Quality in Careers Award, and we will be looking to renew this qualification in the future.
Please take a look at the Careers page on our website for further information: https://www.ormistonriversacademy.co.uk/careers
Q. How does the Academy deal with incidents of bullying or unacceptable behaviour?
The Academy has a robust Behaviour Policy in place, which is understood and adhered to by all academy staff. Students and parents are made aware of this prior to joining the academy. Bullying and unacceptable/anti-social behaviour is absolutely NOT tolerated by the academy, and we apply appropriate sanctions, followed by restorative/reparation actions in every instance. Please take a look at the Academy’s Behaviour Policy on our website, via the following link: https://www.ormistonriversacademy.co.uk/behaviour-for-learning-and-rewards
However, we also appreciate and recognise that the majority of our students do “get it right” most of the time, and we would therefore invite you to also look at our Rewards Programme on our website, via the same link: https://www.ormistonriversacademy.co.uk/behaviour-for-learning-and-rewards
Q. What specific SEN support will be available to my child?
The goal of the SEND department at Ormiston Rivers Academy is to ensure that all students have equality of access to their learning, regardless of the position they start in. The provision we put in place is to enable that access to be fully inclusive for all students, and to place them in a position where they can achieve to the very best of their ability, and beyond, both academically and socially.
The Academy’s SEN Information Report can be viewed on our website, via the following link: https://www.ormistonriversacademy.co.uk/sen
Q. Where can I purchase academy uniform and equipment?
Uniform can be ordered via Mrs C. Surman on front reception, via 01621 782377 or at firstname.lastname@example.org. Uniform can also be ordered direct from our supplier, Anglia Sports & Schoolwear via their online ordering service at: www.yourschoolwear.co.uk.
The academy stocks a great selection of stationery and equipment at a very reasonable cost. Details of this will be sent out prior to your child starting at the academy.
Q. What can my child eat during the school day, and when is this available?
The academy offers a full range of hot and cold food at both break and lunch time. This includes the choice of a full hot meal, “grab and go” items, salad bar, sandwiches, baguettes, pasta salads etc. We also offer a good range of fresh fruit and a selection of drinks. There are also both vegetarian and vegan options available.
Q. My child current receives Free School Meals. Will this continue automatically when they join Ormiston Rivers?
No, unfortunately you will need to re-apply. However, this is quick and easy to do via the link on our website at: https://www.ormistonriversacademy.co.uk/free-school-meals
Q. Will my child qualify for school transport, and how do I arrange this?
If the academy is your closest school (as determined by Essex County Council), then you will be able to apply for free school transport via Essex County Council. Please visit https://www.essex.gov.uk/school-transport for further information. Please note, this will not necessarily apply to all students/areas, even if you choose Ormiston Rivers Academy as your first choice. For example, students travelling from Latchingdon, Cold Norton, Fambridge and Purleigh, and those from outside the Dengie Peninsula will NOT qualify for free school transport, as there are other schools within a shorter close-line distance. Again, please liaise with Essex County Council for further advice, as this guidance is issued directly from them, and the academy have no jurisdiction over this.
Q. Can I arrange to visit the academy to have a look around?
Yes. There is a link available on our website for organised tours every day until October half-term. These will take place at 9.30 a.m., 10.30 a.m., and 2.30 p.m. daily.
